Apollo Bay is a very small town on the coast, midway down the Great Ocean Road.  Anyone who retires here will find an ideal retirement lifestyle with endless beaches, great wildlife, easy and prime public access to the beach and many national and state parks. Casual life style ideal for retirees.  It is situated on the eastern side of Cape Otway, along the edge of the Barham River and on the Great Ocean Road, in the Colac Otway Shire. The town had a population of 1,095 at the 2011 Australian census. It is somewhat unique in that is has plenty of places to enjoy the wildlife such as koalas napping in their preferred food source, Manna gums (a particular type of Eucalyptus tree).

There are several casual neighborhoods and a range of prices. No one lives too far from the sea. Although there are some cabins for sale for less than $100,000, most homes seem to start in the $400,000's and go up from there. Living on the beach in a very nice home will approach or go over $1 million.  There is vacant land for sale in the $100's. There are cabins, apartments, townhomes, and single family homes.

What Is Special about Apollo bay

Appolo Bay has become a tourist destination, particularly among people exploring the Great Ocean Road between Melbourne and Adelaide. It is host to the annual Apollo Bay Music Festival and the Great Ocean Sports Festival. In winter to spring, Southern Right Whales come to the area mainly to breed, to give birth their calves, and to rise them in the warmer, calm waters of South Australia during their migration season. Less frequently, Humpback Whales can be seen off the coast. The Great Ocean Ecolodge here is operated by the Conservation Ecology Centre. All profits are invested into wildlife conservation and the Ecolodge itself is entirely solar powered and ecologically responsible, resting gently in the landscape.

The biggest drawbacks to Apollo Bay are that is small, and quite a long drive from Melbourne along what is generally a small road.
